It is the primary role and responsibility of the Training Division to coordinate and provide training for all department personnel. This includes all basic training for newly hired recruits, annual in-service for current officers, and specialized training hours at the Chief's discretion that is available for NPD Officers and members of outside agencies. All training provided by the Norfolk Police Department is designed to satisfy and/or exceed the requirements set forth by the Department of Criminal Justice Services (DCJS).
Basic Academy Training
The Norfolk Police Department maintains an onsite 26-week training academy that is designed to be both mentally and physically challenging. During the academy phase, police recruits will receive training and instruction from experienced and knowledgeable staff. The curriculum is developed to create qualified police officers for the City of Norfolk who are proficient in patrol procedures, firearms, ethical policing, physical fitness, and defensive tactics. Recruits do not live at the academy during their training and will go home every evening. The Academy is paid and takes place Monday through Friday.
