Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Questioning (LGBTQ) Community Liaison

In August 2015, the Norfolk Police Department appointed Sergeant Craig Lovelace as the official LGBTQ community liaison. The LGBTQ community liaison focuses on the public safety needs of the following communities as well as their allied partners:

  • Bisexual
  • Gay
  • Lesbian
  • Questioning
  • Transgender

In addition to public safety, Sergeant Lovelace serves as a resource to elevate the specific concerns and needs of Norfolk's LGBTQ community members. Currently, the Norfolk Police Department is creating a team of dedicated officers to assist Sergeant Lovelace and the police department in our allied efforts.

Advocate for Our Community

Sergeant Lovelace has been our ongoing advocate with and for the LGBTQ community and has coordinated multiple recruitment events during the Hampton Roads Pride Festivals. He is a current member of the Hampton Roads Pride and assists with the local "Youth Out United - Youth Support Group" initiative. 

Personal Life

Shortly after same sex marriage was legalized in Virginia, Sergeant Lovelace was married to his lifelong partner (and NPD lieutenant) in October 2014. Both Sergeant Lovelace and his husband have been openly gay members of the department for over 20 years.Sergeant Lovelace is currently assigned to the First Patrol Division.
