Lead Paint Hazard Grant Program

The Lead Hazard Reduction Program (LHR) offers federally-funded grants  to assist homeowners of single-family or multifamily homes built before 1978 in  reducing lead paint hazards and other health risks.

The program’s major goal is to assist homeowners and renters reduce lead paint hazards in order to prevent lead poisoning of residents - especially children. The most common cause of lead poisoning in young children is the peeling or flaking of lead paint, which can result in the ingestion of lead dust from window sills, floors, and toys. This program covers the removal of lead dust, painting, or replacing surfaces contaminated with lead-based paint.    


Program Benefits

  1. Inspect and repair any lead paint hazards.  
  2. Lead hazard repairs usually involve painting, replacing windows, or performing other home repairs to remove or contain lead paint. 
  3. All assessments, updates, and repairs are provided at no cost to the homeowner. 
  4. Families may need to be temporarily relocated (for up to 10 days) while remediation work is being conducted.


Program Eligibility

  1. Owner-occupied or rental home built before 1978.
  2. Must have household income; 80% Area Median Income (AMI) or less.
  3. Owner-occupied households must have a pregnant person or child under 6-yrs living or visiting the home regularly.
  4. Rental homes without pregnant residents or children under 6yrs are encouraged to apply.
