Healthy Housing Initiative

The city of Norfolk is home to more than 88,000 households and more than 100 neighborhoods, each with their own set of strengths, challenges, and needs. The Norfolk Healthy Housing initiative aims to improve the health and safety of our neighborhoods by addressing unhealthy housing conditions. This initiative is crucial to achieve housing that is healthy, stable, affordable, and inclusive for all.

This initiative began in 2023 with the support of the National League of Cities’ (NLC) Healthy Housing Community of Practice. The local healthy housing team includes representatives from several agencies to ensure a comprehensive approach to the work. The agencies that participated in establishing community-wide strategies that promote healthy housing include the City of Norfolk’s departments of Housing and Community Development, Human Services, and Neighborhood Services, as well as the Norfolk Redevelopment and Housing Authority, and the Public Health Department.

The Norfolk healthy housing team has identified several action areas and a roadmap to address healthy housing in the city. These strategies are currently in progress and ongoing. In 2024, the Norfolk Healthy Housing team will be meeting quarterly to assess the progress of the roadmap. Long-term, making a difference will require additional resources, effort, and focus. If you represent an organization with a vested interest in healthy housing and want to contribute or coordinate with us, please reach out by email at renovate@norfolk.gov.
