Adult Foster Care

Do you enjoy helping others? Do you have an easily accessible home and spare bedrooms? If you answered yes, consider becoming an Adult Foster Care Provider!

Norfolk Department of Human Services Adult Foster Care Program is now accepting applications for new providers. Adult Foster Care (AFC) homes provide meals, medication management, supervision for safety, coordinate medical appointments and transportation arrangements and assistance to adults who are unable to live independently. The AFC Program offers an opportunity for adults to live in a home-like environment while still having their day-to-day needs met. 

The AFC Program is looking for individuals who are willing to invite adult citizens into their home and family and provide for their basic needs. 

Services

Adult Foster Care Provides Services for the following:

  • Older adults
  • Young adults with lifelong disabilities who were formerly in foster care
  • Adults with mental health needs
  • Adults with intellectual delay(s)

Responsibilities and Benefits

Provider responsibilities include:

  • Coordinate physician appointments and transportation arrangements
  • Maintain a comfortable living environment
  • Prepare meals
  • Supervise adults in the home 24 hours daily

Provider benefits include: 

  • Monthly stipend
  • Support from Norfolk Human Services Adult Services team
  • Satisfaction of knowing you're making a difference in someone's life

Requirements

Interested providers must:

  • Own or rent a home
  • Submit an application
  • Attend orientation session
  • Consent to a home and fire inspection
  • Participate in Child Protective Services/Adult Protective Services background check
  • Participate in criminal background check
  • Complete a tuberculosis (TB) test
  • Provide personal references
