Code Enforcement

The Law on Code Enforcement

Code enforcement uses a variety of tools in an effort to achieve compliance. Education is just one tool that we use to work with property owners to address a violation. We will work with owners and provide a timeline to resolve the issue and to improve the quality of life in your neighborhood.

Common Environmental & Nuisance Violations

  • Illegal Parking - Parking vehicles on unimproved surfaces of the front, corner side yard or buffer yard of a lot in a residential district
  • Inoperable Vehicles - Vehicles which cannot operate on public streets
  • Overgrown Grass - Weeds and grass tall or taller
  • Renting - No more than four (non-related) renters at a single family home
  • Solid Waste - All property shall be free of solid waste, trash and debris
  • Trash Containers - All trash containers must be stored five feet behind the front plane of the building

Penalties & Fines

If education does not resolve the condition, code enforcement may use the following tools:

  • Abatement - City will abate public nuisance - unpaid costs can result in a property lien
  • Judicial Remedies - Criminal prosecution
  • Notice of Violation - Penalties of up to $2,500 per day and/or 12 months in jail
