Citywide Commitment to Community Safety, Health, and Wellbeing
Norfolk faces one of the largest lifespan disparities based on zip code in the nation — a gap of nearly 20 years between its wealthiest and least resourced neighborhoods.
This reality serves as NeighborCare’s North Star. Our long-term vision is to narrow the lifespan gap and build healthier, safer, and more resilient communities in alignment with our Safer Communities-funded comprehensive public safety strategy.
In the near and medium term, we are taking action by addressing social determinants of health (SDoH) through consistent, neighborhood-based interventions designed to leverage Norfolk’s vast human services resources network in the service of those facing the greatest barriers accessing these resources.
The Department of Military & Community Affairs will host monthly resource events across the city’s historically underserved neighborhoods on the 1st Saturday (2 p.m. to 5 p.m.) of every month, focused on the same five key priorities at each event:
- Preventive & Primary Care Access-health screenings and primary care linkages
- Built Environment- safer, cleaner, more connected spaces
- Economic Mobility- job fairs, workforce training, employment connections
- Food Security- fresh, healthy, and affordable food access
- Youth Engagement- violence prevention and positive alternatives
