Be cautious when stepping outside. Watch for downed power lines, broken glass, or floodwaters. Avoid floodwaters, as they may be contaminated or conceal dangerous debris.
Inspect Your Home:
Check for structural damage. If you suspect damage, such as cracks or holes in the walls or ceiling, or if you smell gas, evacuate immediately and contact authorities.
Stay Informed:
Continue monitoring local news or weather updates for information on recovery. The City of Norfolk will release information through TV/radio media, Norfolk Alert, and social media after a storm.
Use Generators Safely
Never use portable generators or other gas-powered portable equipment indoors. It can lead to a buildup of carbon monoxide - a deadly, poisonous gas you cannot see or smell.
Inspect the generator for damage or loose fuel lines. Keep the generator dry, and maintain and operate it according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
Never use a portable generator indoors or in enclosed spaces such as garages, crawl spaces, and basements.
Use generators outdoors, but never place a generator near doors, windows, or ventilation shafts. Carbon monoxide can enter through these areas and build up.
Ensure the generator has 3 to 4 feet of clear space on all sides and above it to ensure adequate ventilation.
If you or others show symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning - dizziness, headaches, nausea/vomiting, tiredness, confusion, unconsciousness - get to fresh air immediately and seek medical attention. Do not re-enter the area until trained and properly equipped personnel determine it is safe.
Keep Pets Safe:
Check your yard and surroundings for sharp objects or hazardous conditions before letting your pets out. Ensure they continue to have access to clean food and water. Never let them outside without a collar or ID tag after a storm.
