During a Hurricane

Stay Indoors: Remain in your designated safe room. Stay away from windows, glass doors, and skylights. Close interior doors and secure exterior doors.  Weather conditions may vary, with winds decreasing or increasing through the storm. If the eye moves over and winds become calm, do not go outside as strong winds will quickly return.

Monitor Weather Alerts: Keep a battery-powered or hand-crank radio to receive emergency alerts if power goes out. Sign up for Norfolk Alerts.

Protect Against Flooding: Move valuables and electronics to higher ground if you’re in a flood-prone area. If flood waters begin to enter your home, move to the second floor. Do not go into the attic of your home, as rising flood waters could trap you there.

Stay Out of the Water: Storm surge flooding and flooding from heavy rain can contain debris, sewage, or other hazards. Do not enter flood waters or drive into flood waters.

Be Alert: Conditions during a hurricane can change rapidly. Be prepared for possible tornadoes, strong winds or rising waters.

Stay Calm: Reassure family members and pets. Animals can become stressed during storms, so keep them close and in a quiet area with familiar bedding or toys.

Avoid Using Candles: Use flashlights or battery-operated lanterns instead of candles to reduce the risk of fire.
