[ARCHIVED] A ‘Dream Court’ Comes to Berkley Park

Basketball court ribbon cutting with the City of Norfolk, Nancy Lieberman Charities & the Southside Boys and Girls Club

NORFOLK, VA – The City of Norfolk, in partnership with Nancy Lieberman Charities and the Southside Boys and Girls Club, announces the ribbon cutting for a Dream Court™ in Berkley Park (706 Walker Ave.) on Monday, June 27, at 10:30 a.m. An existing city basketball court is now transformed into a Dream Court™, through the generous donations of Wallace and Linda Hailsip, Old Dominion University alumni.

Since the inception of the Dream Court™ program in 2010, more than 100 Dream Courts have been installed across the United States to make basketball more accessible to children and provide an environment for them to play. More than three million youth play on Dream Courts in the U.S., with each court serving approximately 120 youth per day and helping to improve the lives of more than 4.2 million children a year.

“I want to thank Nancy Lieberman Charities for this high-quality, high-performance addition to the Southside community basketball court,” said Norfolk Mayor Kenneth Cooper Alexander. “This new Dream Court™ will provide a safe and fun space to enjoy the game of basketball, helping to make a positive impact on the youth of this community.”

The Southside Boys and Girls Club, in cooperation with the City, requested the Dream Court™ from the Nancy Lieberman Charities. The Dream Court™ is high school regulation size, 50’ x 84’, with two new basketball goals. It features a high-performance PowerGame surface from Sport Court®. Sport Court® is Nancy Lieberman Charities’ national partner for this program.

“This is such an incredible opportunity to say thank you to Old Dominion University for my amazing time there, and to unite with one of the greatest Monarchs ever, Ticha Penicheiro, to change community children's lives. We are so thankful to Wally and Linda Haislip for their love, vision and generosity to our championship program " said Nancy Lieberman, Basketball Hall of Famer.

"Being able to team up with Nancy to bring a Dream Court to the City of Norfolk is such a blessing. I have looked up to Nancy since I landed at ODU, back in 1994. And now we are “teammates” providing dreams to the youth of Hampton Roads!" said Ticha Penicheiro, 4X WNBA All-Star and former ODU Lady Monarch.
