The second annual Expo is from 11 AM until 3 PM in the Big Blue Room at ODU’s Chartway Arena and will feature more than 40 recruiters from area corporations, non-profit organizations and government agencies.
On March 21, prospective LGBTQ job seekers, interns, and volunteers will meet with employment, volunteer, and internship recruiters at OutWork757, Hampton Roads’ LGBTQ Career Expo at Old Dominion University in Norfolk.
The second annual Expo is from 11 AM until 3 PM in the Big Blue Room at ODU’s Chartway Arena and will feature more than 40 recruiters from area corporations, non-profit organizations and government agencies. The Expo is the keystone event in a week-long schedule of career-oriented training and events for LGBTQ jobseekers and recruiters.
On March 5, Expo recruiters and other interested businesses and organizations are invited to participate in a Diversity and Inclusion Seminar produced by Hampton Roads Business Outreach (HRBOR), the region’s LGBTQ Chamber of Commerce. The seminar offers training and tools organizations need to create inclusive human resource and recruiting policies and procedures.
On March 17-20, ODU’s Human Resources Office will present a series of seminars tailored to the LGBTQ jobseeker: Communication Skills, Time Management, Presentation Skills, and Dressing for Success. On Friday, March 20, ODU’s Career Counseling Center will host Big Blue’s Boutique, a clothing closet offering free professional clothing.
“While LGBTQ hiring events are becoming commonplace in larger metropolitan areas, OutWork757 is only one of two in the Commonwealth,” said Eric Hause, Expo producer. “The reason this one is a success is because the LGBTQ workforce is finding affirmative companies and organizations in Hampton Roads that actively recognize their unique needs.”
Hause also points to recent legislation passed in the Virginia General Assembly prohibiting discrimination in the workplace based on sexual orientation and gender identity. “The passage of the Virginia Values Act combined with hiring events such as ours makes Virginia a desirable location for all LGBTQ job-seekers,” he said.
At the 2019 Expo, recruiters were present from 42 corporations, agencies and municipalities, including from the cities of Norfolk and Virginia Beach, Norfolk Southern Corporation, Cox Communications, and Dominion Energy.
The Expo is sponsored by Avalon Bay Communities and Sentara Healthcare. Career Week and the Expo are produced and presented by Hampton Roads Business Outreach, Old Dominion University’s Career Development Services, Old Dominion University’s Safe Space Committee, and OutWire757.com.
The Expo and all associated events are free and open to the public. A complete schedule of the week’s events and registration are online at www.OutWork757.com.
