[ARCHIVED] City of Norfolk Observes Martin Luther King, Jr. Day

NORFOLK, Va. – The City of Norfolk invites the community to gather in celebration of the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. at “A Celebration of Unity & Freedom in Song.” 

The annual event takes place at the historic Attucks Theatre (1010 Church St.) on Monday, Jan. 19. The celebration begins at 9 a.m. with the unveiling of a new historical marker, followed by a 10 a.m. ceremony featuring Minister Peggy Britt, Minister Earl Bynum and a powerful performance by The Norfolk Street Choir Project. 

Following the program, attendees are encouraged to stand together with Norfolk City Council and City leadership for a Unity March from the Attucks Theatre to the Martin Luther King, Jr. monument (701 Church St.), honoring Dr. King’s enduring vision of peace, justice and community. Arrive early and experience “Black Voices & Visions” at The Gallery at the Attucks. Doors open at 8 a.m.

City of Norfolk offices will be closed on Monday, Jan. 19, in observance of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. Closures include libraries, recreation facilities, The Slover, Norfolk Animal Care Center, Norfolk Courthouse, Commissioner of the Revenue, Treasurer’s Office and Norfolk Department of Public Health. Regular hours of operation will resume on Tuesday, Jan. 20. 

There is no change to trash and recycling service. Bulk waste pickup requests for Tuesday, Jan. 20, must be submitted by 3 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 16. Request bulk item pickups and more than 100 City services using the MyNorfolk app, online portal or by calling Norfolk Cares at (757) 664-6510.
