NORFOLK, Va. — Hampton Roads Transit (HRT) is providing extended free rides on the Tide Light Rail this Saturday, Oct. 25, in support of homecoming festivities at Norfolk State University.
Previously, HRT, the City of Norfolk and NSU teamed up to offer free transit and parking options for fans heading to and from football games. On Saturday, rail service and parking will be free all day in support of the homecoming parade, the football game against South Carolina State and post-game concert.
For the parade, starting at Park Avenue and Virginia Beach Boulevard at 8 a.m., the light rail will operate at 30-minute intervals beginning at 6 a.m., increasing to 20-minute service by 8:30 a.m. and 15-minute intervals by 9 a.m. This level of service will continue throughout the day to get fans to and from Dick Price Stadium for the 2 p.m. kickoff against South Carolina State University.
In support of the concert, the last train will depart Newtown Road Station westbound at 11 p.m. The last departure eastbound from the EVMC/Forth Norfolk Station will be at 11:30 p.m.
Parking will be free at MacArthur South and North garages beginning at 7 a.m. HRT’s free park-and-ride lots are available at the Newtown Road and Military Highway stations as well as the parking lot behind the EVMC/Fort Norfolk Station. The NSU and Ballentine/Broad Creek stations are closest to campus.
The parade will affect HRT bus service on Oct. 25 along Park Avenue, Virginia Beach Boulevard, and Corprew Avenue from 7:30-11 a.m. Routes 9 and 20 will detour during this time frame. Customers should expect heavy traffic delays in this area during the event.
