Iron oxide spilled into the Eastern Branch of the Elizabeth River; lasting impacts not expected
NORFOLK, Va. – On Thursday evening, March 7, Norfolk’s Fire-Rescue and Public Works’ Stormwater Division notified DEQ of a spill of iron oxide dye used to color mulch. The spill occurred at a residence located in the Ingleside neighborhood. The dye entered a storm drain that empties into the Eastern Branch of the Elizabeth River, making it dark red.
DEQ and the City of Norfolk are investigating the cause and potential impacts of the spill. The iron oxide dye is nonhazardous and is not expected to cause any environmental or health impacts. The dye is expected to dissipate in the coming days.
The City of Norfolk Fire Marshal has issued a Notice of Violation to the responsible party for an illicit discharge to a storm drain. This incident serves as a visual reminder to residents of the importance of properly disposing of materials and not allowing anything other than rainwater into storm drains.
