Man Sentenced to Nearly 3 Years for Breaking Into Neighbors’ Properties in 2022
NORFOLK, Va. — A Norfolk Circuit Court judge sentenced Corey Dwan Sanders, 39, last week to two years and 11 months in prison for burglarizing two of his Foxhall neighbors’ properties in 2022.
On Sept. 25, 2022, Mr. Sanders and a co-defendant, Brittany Lee Bowman, entered an Arthur Circle home’s side garage door and stole numerous items. The victim reported the burglary to Norfolk Police, reviewed her home video surveillance system, recognized both Mr. Sanders and Ms. Bowman from the neighborhood, and identified them to detectives. Officers arrested Ms. Bowman on Oct. 4, 2022, she confessed to her role in the burglary, and she implicated Mr. Sanders.
On Nov. 11, 2022, Mr. Sanders stole items from an Ashby Street home’s detached garage that had been left open. In February 2023, the homeowner noticed items missing from the garage, checked his home video surveillance system, and recognized Mr. Sanders — who had previously done work on the victim’s home — committing the November burglary. The victim reported Mr. Sanders to Norfolk Police, and officers arrested Mr. Sanders in March.
Ms. Bowman pleaded guilty in April to grand larceny, burglary, and conspiring to commit burglary. She was sentenced by Judge Mary Jane Hall in June to 12 months in jail and two years in the Community Corrections Alternative Program, to be followed by two years of supervised probation and uniform good behavior.
On Feb. 1, Mr. Sanders pleaded guilty to two counts of burglary, and Judge Robert B. Rigney accepted Mr. Sanders’ plea agreement with an active sentence of two years and 11 months in prison. Judge Rigney suspended an additional seven years and one month in prison on the conditions that Mr. Sanders complete two years of supervised probation and uniform good behavior upon his release.
Assistant Commonwealth’s Attorney A. Robinson Winn Sr. prosecuted Mr. Sanders’ case on behalf of the Commonwealth, Assistant Commonwealth’s Attorney Caswell W. Richardson prosecuted Ms. Bowman’s case on behalf of the Commonwealth, and Norfolk Police Detective John A. Schraft Jr. led the investigation.
