[ARCHIVED] The Importance of Libraries Series Presents: Censorship in Schools

A moderated panel discussion brought to you by the Slover Library Foundation, Norfolk Public Library Foundation, and The Friends of the Norfolk Public Library

NORFOLK, VA — The Slover Library Foundation is hosting the “Importance of Libraries Series: Censorship in Schools” on Thursday, April 27, from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at Slover Library (235 E. Plume Street).

This year’s program includes a moderated panel discussion of the increased efforts to censor school library materials, associated legislation, and how this climate impacts school librarians and student access to diverse literature. Sarah Pishko, owner of Prince Books, will have some of the challenged books available for purchase.

Panelists:

Kelly Miller - President, Virginia Association of School Librarians

Lisa R. Varga, MLS – Executive Director, Virginia Library Association

Alvenia Peerman – Library Media Specialist, Academy of International Studies at Rosemont, Norfolk Public Schools

Jill Blake – Library Media Specialist, Bayside High School, Virginia Beach City Public Schools

The “Importance of Libraries” series is supported through a partnership of the Slover Library Foundation, Friends of the Norfolk Public Library, and the Norfolk Public Library Foundation.
