Traffic Unit

The Traffic Unit plays a vital role in safeguarding Norfolk’s roadways and ensuring the smooth flow of community life. Comprised of highly trained officers, the unit is distinguished by its dual responsibilities: most members also serve in the Motorcycle Unit, providing agility and visibility during escorts and special events, while collectively all officers form the department’s Fatal & Serious Crash Team, responding to and investigating the most critical collisions.

    • Supporting safe passage for children in school zones
  • Crash investigations
    • Conducting thorough inquiries into collisions, including fatal and serious injury cases
  • Targeted enforcement
    • Addressing violations in school zones, high-crash locations, and areas with speeding concerns
  • Speed enforcement & saturation patrols
    • Reducing dangerous driving behaviors through proactive patrols

Specialized training

Officers assigned to the Traffic Unit receive advanced instruction in crash reconstruction and DUI enforcement, equipping them with the expertise to analyze complex incidents and remove impaired drivers from the road. This specialized training ensures that the unit not only enforces traffic laws but also contributes to long-term roadway safety through precision, professionalism, and community-focused service.
