The Historic Preservation Program is responsible for developing and implementing historic preservation initiatives in Norfolk. It is also responsible for facilitating the Architectural Review Board processes, which include review for Certificates of Appropriateness required for projects in local historic districts. The program supports the City’s on-going architectural survey program, local, state, and national historic designation efforts, and the public with questions about historic preservation.
The City of Norfolk is proud to be a Certified Local Government (CLG), a program jointly-managed by the Virginia Department of Historic Resource and the National Park Service. This designation recognizes Norfolk’s commitment to local preservation and saving the past for future generations. It also certifies that the City’s preservation program meets national standards. Designation as a CLG qualifies the City for certain grant funds, enables more formal participation in preservation processes like Section 106 review, and requires on-going local preservation efforts.
