Hiring Process

Norfolk’s Firefighter Recruit hiring process is a competitive process. In order to be selected for hire, candidates are required to successfully complete each step below. The Firefighter Recruit Hiring Process is as follows:

  1. Online Application 
  2. Written Exam
  3. Physical Agility Test
  4. Ranking Interview
  5. Background Investigation
  6. Polygraph Examination
  7. Final Assessment
  8. Medical Examination
  9. OEMS Fingerprinting
  10. Drug Screen

Minimum Requirements

  • Be a (U.S.) citizen, lawful permanent resident, or authorized to work in the U.S.
  • High school diploma or GED equivalent. 
  • Valid Driver's License.
  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
