Violent Crimes Unit

The Violent Crimes Unit investigations include but are not limited to identifying any current patterns within designated crimes or high-profile cases. The Violent Crime Unit investigates crimes such as homicide, malicious wounding, undetermined deaths, police involved shootings, individual and commercial robberies, carjacking, home invasion, larceny from the person, jail escapees, abduction, infant deaths, endangered/missing persons, and flight to avoid arrest.

Homicide Section

The Homicide Section is responsible for investigating all murders, unattended deaths, accidental deaths, non-sexual abductions, aircraft accidents, deaths of individuals while in custody, and police pursuits involving a fatality. The phone number is 757-664-7023.

Malicious Wounding Section

The Malicious Wounding Section has the responsibility of investigating all non-fatal shootings as well as all non-domestic related aggravated assaults. The phone number is 757-664-7032.

Robbery Section

The Robbery Section is responsible for investigating all crimes involving commercial robberies, individual robberies, larceny from the person, jail escapes, carjacking, and home invasion. The phone number is 757-664-7032.

Forensics Section

The Forensics Section is responsible for the processing of evidence related to crimes being investigated by the Norfolk Police Department.

  •  Field Forensics investigators document crime scenes. Scene processing involves photographing the scene, completing forensic reports, creating diagrams, and collecting and vouchering evidence.
  • Latent Prints investigators are certified to identify finger and palm prints lifted by Field Forensics. 
  • Computer Forensics investigators are responsible for the recovery and download of electronic data and video from electronic devices. 
  • The NIBIN Unit examines cartridge casings recovered from crime scenes or collected from firearms. 

Fugitive Section

The Fugitive Section is responsible for the extradition of individuals arrested outside the city limits of Norfolk.  They are responsible for coordinating resources and assisting other agencies in apprehending fugitives within our jurisdiction. The Fugitive Section also serves as Task Force Officers for the United States Marshals Service, further assisting with out-of-jurisdiction investigations and utilizing federal resources to aid in the arrest of fugitives.  

Task Force Officers (TFOs)

The liaisons between the federal government and the Norfolk Police Department.  TFOs are responsible for reviewing cases and determining whether they will be adopted by the United States Attorney for prosecution.
