NORFOLK, Va. – (NPD) The Norfolk Police Department is joining the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) in recognizing October 19-25 as “National Teen Driver Safety Week.”
This annual campaign highlights the importance of safe driving habits among teens and urges parents and guardians to take an active role in promoting responsible behavior behind the wheel.
Traffic crashes remain a leading cause of death for teens aged 15-18.
In 2023, 2,611 people were killed in crashes involving a teen driver, including 822 teen drivers, while 87,074 teen drivers were injured.
Teen drivers face increased risks due to inexperience and contributing factors such as distraction, speeding, impairment, fatigue, and failure to wear seat belts. According to NHTSA, teens whose parents set firm driving rules are less likely to engage in risky behaviors and are involved in fewer crashes.
National Teen Driver Safety Week reminds families to discuss the “Rules of the Road” and the responsibilities that come with driving.
NHTSA provides resources to help parents address risky behaviors and encourage safe driving habits at www.nhtsa.gov/road-safety/teen-driving.
