Dangerous heat levels are expected for today, Friday and Saturday. The City of Norfolk has extended hours for several Parks and Recreation centers to help residents and community members stay safe and stay cool:

  • East Oceanview Recreation Center (9520 20th Bay Street) Open Fri. at 12:30 PM, Sat. at 11:00 AM
  • Berkley Recreation Center (121 W Liberty Street) Open Fri. at 12:30 PM, Sat. 11:00 AM
  • Norview Community Center (6380 Sewells Point Road) Open Fri. at 10:00 AM, Sat. at 11:30 AM

All locations are open until 8:00 PM Thursday, Friday and Saturday.

If you're working outdoors during excessive heat, it is important to take regular breaks and adequately hydrate throughout the day.

  • Drink cool water and add electrolytes
  • Take rest breaks in the A/C or in the shade
  • Wear light and loose-fitting clothing
  • Avoid peak sun hours and modify work schedules if possible
  • Use the buddy system to monitor one another
  • Acclimate team members to the heat
  • Never work alone in the heat
