[ARCHIVED] Norfolk Police Chief addresses shooting on Granby Street

NORFOLK, Va. (NPD) – Detectives are continuing to investigate this afternoon’s double shooting on Granby Street that left two men injured.

On April 7, 2021 around 4:20 p.m. Norfolk police responded to the 400 block of Granby Street for the report of a gunshot victim. When officers arrived, they located two men who were both suffering from gunshot wounds. The men were transported to a local hospital for treatment and are in stable condition.

The preliminary investigation has revealed, the two men were crossing the street when a vehicle that was driving by started shooting. The vehicle is described as a white Hyundai Genesis which fled southbound on Granby Street before police arrived.

Two firearms were recovered by detectives at the crime scene.

“The Norfolk Police Department is committed to guarding the safety of those who live in and visit all areas of our City, said Chief Larry D. Boone. As recent events illustrate, no area of our city or in Hampton Roads is immune to gun violence. Hope deferred makes the heart sick. Hampton Roads has a problem with guns getting into the hands of those who have lost hope. I want to underscore these are not random shootings, but shootings committed by selfish individuals with no regard for the sanctity of life. We MUST come together as a community to address this very serious public health issue.”

The Norfolk Police Department will continue to maintain its highly visible police presence in the Downtown area in preparation for increased social activities as the weather starts to warm up, and COVID-19 restrictions become more relaxed.

In an effort to prevent a repeat of today’s violence, additional officers will be assigned to patrol the Granby Street corridor to ensure a safe environment for all of those who live, work and visit Downtown Norfolk.

This shooting is being investigated as an isolated incident, and the motive has not yet been determined.

As detectives continue to investigate this afternoon’s shooting, they ask for anyone with information about this incident to contact the Norfolk Crime Line at 1-888-LOCK-U-UP or submit a tip through the P3Tips mobile app.
