Designating a beneficiary ensures that your benefits go to the people you choose.
It is essential that Norfolk Employees' Retirement System and Virginia Retirement System members update this information when they have family or personal changes (for example: birth of a child, marriage, divorce, etc.) so that the right person (or people) get the benefits without unnecessary delays.
You can update your beneficiaries at any time during the year and are encouraged to review designated beneficiary information annually via PeopleSoft Self-Service (NERS members) or myVRS (VRS members).
Remember: A beneficiary is not an emergency contact, even if it's the same person. Both roles serve different purposes, and you must designate each separately, even if you choose the same individual. All City employees should update their Emergency Contact information via PeopleSoft Self-Service.
