[ARCHIVED] Two people charged in connection with shooting on Arcadia Street

NORFOLK, Va. (NPD) – Two people have been charged following a shooting on Arcadia Street Saturday afternoon that left both a Norfolk Police Officer and a suspect injured. 

On July 6, 2024, around 3:22 p.m. officers were dispatched to a home in the 3800 block of Arcadia Street to assist Child Protective Services with an investigation. When police arrived, a woman became combative with Officers, and while police were engaged with the woman, a male suspect fired shots at the Officers. At which time, Officers discharged their service weapons, and returned fire.

An officer sustained multiple gunshot wounds and suffered non-life-threatening injuries. The Officer is expected to recover.

As a result of the investigation, Norfolk detectives have charged Cassandra J. Smith, 23, of Norfolk, with two counts of conspiracy to commit aggravated assault on a law enforcement Officer, disorderly conduct, and obstruction of justice.

Smith was taken into custody at the scene and is currently being held in Norfolk City Jail without bond.

The second person charged, identified as Samuel M. Burton, 29, of Norfolk, sustained a life-threatening gunshot wound and remains in the hospital receiving treatment.

Burton has been charged with attempted aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer, malicious wounding of a law enforcement officer, and use of a firearm. 

Burton will be transported to the Norfolk City Jail and held without bond when released from the hospital.  

The Virginia State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation is continuing to investigate the actions of the officers involved in this shooting. Anyone who may have information about the shooting is asked to contact the Norfolk Crime Line or Virginia State Police.

All involved Officers will be placed on administrative duty pending the outcome of this investigation.
