[ARCHIVED] Norfolk Team Wins First Place in the 2024 Virginia Datathon

Norfolk wins Virginia Datathon

Congratulations to Natasha Singh-Miller (CivicLab), Jay Spare (CivicLab), Matt Konopka (CivicLab) and Adonnica McCain (Human Services) who won First Place in the 2024 Virginia Datathon.

The event, hosted annually since 2014 by The Virginia Office of Data Governance and Analytics, invites teams from across the state to create applications using state data to promote efficiency and transparency within state government. Event participants include state agencies, students, localities, non-profits and private sector employees.

This year’s focus was the challenge of expanding and developing the Virginia Workforce under the theme: “Boosting the Virginia Workforce.”

The twelve teams had nearly a week to develop an innovative solution and presentation related to the proposed challenge. On April 19, the teams joined in Richmond where a panel of judges reviewed the team presentations and announced awards.

The judges found the Norfolk project to be a great way to Boost the Virginia Workforce.

The project was to create another measurable mobile solution for our clients to receive employment opportunities through texting. The entire staff would provide the phone numbers from every head of household in their caseload. We would measure the success of notification by clients advising the staff of their interviews or interest and needs for interviewing preparations.

Once implemented and tested in Norfolk Human Services, this could be expanded to any agency working to improve client placement in the workforce.

Congratulations, Team! Your incredible skill and innovation will improve the lives of residents who most need a boost in the workforce.
