[ARCHIVED] A Solar Eclipse is Coming

Solar Eclipse

On Monday, April 8, a solar eclipse will cross North America.

Experience the eclipse safely by following these tips:

  1. Virginia is not in the path of totality, meaning the moon will not completely block the sun. If you're watching the eclipse in Norfolk, you must wear eclipse glasses the entire time.

  2. Eclipse glasses are not regular sunglasses, and regular sunglasses (no matter how dark) are unsafe to use during an eclipse. Approved eclipse glasses have a special filter that is ISO 12312-2 compliant and must come from an AAS-approved manufacturer/distributor. Eclipse glasses are 1,000 times darker than regular sunglasses. Double-check your eclipse glasses to ensure they are free from scratches, holes or tears.

  3. If you’re planning to view the eclipse alone or as part of a group during work hours, please make sure that you are wearing ISO approved glasses. Any participation in watching or other activities related to the event is voluntary.

  4. Avoid becoming a statistic! Did you know vehicle accidents rise during eclipse events? Avoid driving during the eclipse, where possible.

  5. For more solar eclipse information, check out this resource from NASA.
