[ARCHIVED] Suspect arrested; Officer sustains minor injuries after being hit by a car Monday morning

NORFOLK, Va. (NPD) – Norfolk Police have arrested and charged a woman who hit an Officer with her car, and then led police on a pursuit on Monday.

On March 20th at 10:08 a.m. investigators were standing in a parking lot located at 4820 Hampton Boulevard when one of the investigators was hit by a car. The investigator sustained minor injuries and is expected to recover.

The car that hit the investigator immediately fled from the parking lot.

Around 11:40 a.m. an Officer spotted the car parked in the 500 block of W 21st Street and attempted to conduct a traffic stop; however, the driver started to drive away.

The Officer continued to pursue the car. While passing through the intersection of W 39th Street and Colley Avenue, the suspect hit a citizen's car. The citizen sustained minor injuries and was taken to the hospital for treatment. 

After hitting the citizen’s car, the suspect continued driving, hitting another parked car, as well as a telephone pole on Michigan Avenue. 

No longer able to drive the car, the woman fled in the 700 block of Michigan Avenue and was taken into custody following a brief foot pursuit. The woman was transported to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital with minor injuries. 

As a result of the investigation, detectives have charged Kayla B. Gilchrist, 26, with the following: Attempted Malicious Wounding of a Law Enforcement Officer, Assault on a Law Enforcement Officer, Eluding, Hit & Run, Obstruction, Trespassing, Fail to Yield the Right of Way, Driving on the Wrong Side of Road, two counts of Fail to Obey Highway Sign, and Burglary.
