[ARCHIVED] MacArthur Memorial to Explore United States/Asia Relationship

NORFOLK, Va. – "The future and the very existence of the United States is tied up in Asia and its island outposts,” wrote General of the Army Douglas MacArthur. To explore critical turning points in these relationships and to better understand Asia in the 21st Century, the MacArthur Memorial is hosting two virtual events featuring critically acclaimed authors.

On November 18, 2020 at 7:00 PM, the MacArthur Memorial will host Richard Frank, author of Downfall and Guadalcanal, for a virtual discussion of Tower of Skulls - a path-breaking account of the onset of the Asia-Pacific War. Tower of Skulls casts a penetrating light on the region and examines how struggles in Europe and Asia merged into a global World War II.

On November 19, 2020 at 7:00 PM, the MacArthur Memorial will host Daniel Kurtz-Phelan for a virtual discussion of The China Mission: George Marshall's Unfinished War 1945-1947.

The China Mission tells the story of the failed attempted to prevent a Communist takeover of China. It offers a gripping view of Marshall, Mao, Chiang Kai-shek, Truman, and MacArthur as they struggled to understand China, with consequences and lessons that echo today.

These events are free. To register, please visit:  www.macarthurmemorial.org.
