Chrysler Museum – Pier Luigi Nervi: Art and Science of Building2021-10-01T00:00:00This year marks the 50th anniversary of Norfolk’s greatest modern building: Scope Arena. Designed by renowned Italian architect Pier Luigi Nervi in collaboration with local architectural firm Williams and Tazewell, its soaring struts lift the dome and paradoxically let light in from below, not above as in traditional domed structures.
This exhibition will follow Nervi’s career as an architect in Italy through many projects, including airplane hangars, cathedrals, exhibit halls, and skyscrapers, giving visitors an understanding of the unique architectural achievement of Scope and its place in the history of modern architecture.

d'Art Center presents "Scene" and Suzanne Yurdin Solo Exhibition in the Vault2022-01-15T17:00:00Last chance to see "Scene," a national exhibition of unique 2D and 3D artworks that are inspired by cities, towns, landmarks, and places. What scene inspires the work of today’s artists? Is it a tiny town in the middle of nowhere, or a buzzing city full of light and noise? Is it a natural wonder, or a famous man made landmark?
The open call for Scene received 387 submissions from 109 artists from 33 states. 51 pieces from 39 artists from 18 states (11 Virginian artists) were selected for this exhibition.
Suzanne Yurdin is a contemporary abstract painter who lives and works in Falls Church, VA. As the youngest of four, she was always playing outside or participating in sports. Her paintings pay homage to that love of nature and sense of adventure.

ODU presents "Art from Guantanamo Bay Exhibition"2022-01-21T18:00:00Detainees at the United States military prison camp known as Guantánamo Bay have made art from the time they arrived. The Art from Guantánamo Bay exhibition features 101 of these evocative works, made by men held without trial, some for more than 15 years. The six artists include both current (Moath Al Alwi and Ahmed Rabbani) and former (Muhammad Ansi, Abdualmalik (Alrahabi) Abud, Sabri Al Qurashi, Mansoor Adayfi) detainees, none of whom have been charged with committing a crime.
Most pieces in the exhibition were taken from Guantánamo by the detainees' attorneys for this showing and following a laborious process of searching, scanning, and analysis for hidden messages by Guantánamo officials. A stamp reading "Approved by US Forces" signals that a work has been cleared, and the stamp's ink often bleeds through to the image on the other side, creating a ghostly mix of art and authority.
