Fix a Leak Week

Leaks add up to almost 10,000 gallons of wasted water per year for the average household. That's enough to wash 300 loads of laundry. Email utpublicinfo@norfolk.gov to request FREE leak detection tablets and an informational brochure. Here are some handy tips:

  • Clothes washer: Check for pooling water, which could indicate a supply line leak.
  • In the tub: Turn on the tub, then divert the water to the shower and see if there’s still a lot of water coming from the tub spout; that could mean the tub spout diverter needs replacing.
  • Kitchen and bathroom faucets: Listen for drips and tighten aerators or replace fixtures if necessary.
  • Water heater: Check beneath the tank for pooling water, rust, or other signs of leakage.
  • At the outdoor spigot: Ensure tight connections with the hose and see if the hose washer needs replacing.

March 14-16 is Fix A Leak Week

If you feel you have a large bill,
there are steps we can take to help

First, make sure you read your bill correctly. Visit our website for more information on how to read your bill.

  • Note, billing cycles that were once 28 – 32 days may increase to as long as 37 – 39 days due to staffing shortages. Norfolk Utilities has about 70,000 meters. We also have a vendor who does meter reading for us. Water utilities and their contractors across the country are experiencing staffing shortages due to the pandemic. The staffing shortage affects how often we can read meters.
  • Call us when you have questions. Our customer service center receives calls every day. We are transparent in our billing. If at any point a customer feels they’ve been billed incorrectly, they can call us at 757-664-6700. We will send a mechanic out to verify that the meter is working and being read correctly, and that there are no leaks on the city-owned portion of the water line. We will leave a door tag verifying the customer reading.
  • Our website offers tips for leak detection as well.
  • We can make payment arrangements. In fact, because of the pandemic, we have 24-month payment plans (typically it’s 6 months). Those are handled on a case by case basis. We try to work with customers as much as we can.
