NORFOLK, VA – Looking for career training assistance? Or, has your employment been impacted by COVID-19? Norfolk’s Gateway Academy, offered by the city’s CARES T.E.A.M., offers career training opportunities in fields including certified nursing assistant, certified food manager, commercial driver’s license, construction and facilities technology, medical billing and coding and pharmacy technician.
This training is open to Norfolk residents in two categories:
- Receive SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) benefits and meet one of the following additional criteria: misdemeanor or felony conviction; 18-49 years old with no dependents on SNAP; child support case with TANF debt owed; or a youth or young adult (17-27 years old) transitioning from foster care;
OR
- Low- to moderate-income Norfolk residents whose employment was affected by COVID-19 through furlough, layoff, termination, or reduced hours.
High school diploma or GED required for pharmacy tech and medical billing training. Some criminal convictions may exclude training.
Eligibility for training and funding upon completion of Gateway Academy assigned activities including job readiness or professional development workshops. Participants must have access to phone, email, a computer and internet service.
