Team Norfolk,
Please see the 4 pm Brief from the NWS. Norfolk is under a Winter Storm Warning from tonight at 10 pm until tomorrow at 4 pm as well as a Coastal Flood Advisory from 3:00 am. to 10:00 am.
We are expecting the rainfall to begin around 6 pm and then start the transition to snow around 10 pm. The forecast still hasn’t moved from the 3-4” expected for our area. During the overnight hours the winds pick up and the temperatures fall; we can see 40mph wind gusts and freezing temps by 7 am which are expected to last for several hours. While winds continue to decrease throughout the overnight hours Saturday night, the freezing temperatures remain until Sunday afternoon. There is not much difference in tomorrow’s tidal forecast. It is still expected to peak around the 5’ mark (minor flood stage) at 6:22 am.
City Manager Dr. Filer declared a local emergency today at 12 pm to assist Public Works in securing contractors in advance of the storm.
While preparations continue, we also have the following to share for your planning purposes:
- Hampton Roads Transit will suspend service Saturday, January 29, in anticipation of the latest winter storm conditions that call for snow, high winds, and deepening cold that will make travel and outdoor activity hazardous.
- Public Health has announced the COVID19 Community Vaccination and Testing Center at Military Circle Mall will be closed Saturday, January 29, and Sunday, January 30 due to expected inclement weather.
- York Street Garage opens at noon today for downtown residents and businesses, as downtown streets need to be easily accessible for plowing operations.
- Norfolk Cares Call Center activated for tomorrow.
Stay tuned for more updates.
Thanks, and be safe!
