On October 22, 2020, Governor Ralph Northam visited Norfolk to announce the Commonwealth's plan for the Virginia Coastal Resilience Master Planning Framework. The announcement was made at the LaValette Avenue Kayak Launch and Fishing Pier; this area is frequently impacted by nuisance coastal flooding and tidal impacts due to sea level rise. The framework will provide Virginia with a strategic approach to coastal protection and adaptation with the goal of implementation by the end of 2021.
On behalf of the City of Norfolk, Mayor Kenneth Cooper Alexander provided remarks and the City's Chief Resilience Officer, Doug Beaver, was in attendance. In addition, Cheryll Sumner, President of the Chesterfield Heights Civic League (the main project area for the Ohio Creek Watershed Project), rendered remarks regarding her enthusiasm for the framework (pictured above). The Office of Resilience looks forward to supporting this monumental initiative and continuing to advance resiliency in the City of Norfolk!
