All systems are go. Understanding the track has improved for us significantly, our Governor’s evacuation order is still active, our area is still within reach of the storm’s cone of uncertainty, the storm will stall, and we are under a Tropical Storm WATCH.
Coastal flooding: As stated in the last briefing, high tides will rise incrementally overnight tonight through Friday. The highest tide reaches near 6’ Friday at 1:28pm and again overnight at 1:47am. To help determine what this might look like for your area, visit Norfolk’s TITAN program. IMPORTANT NOTE: Tide information is usually provided in one way (MLLW) and the tool uses another (NAVD88). All the uses needs to do is remember to subtract 1.5’ from the number given in the tide chart. In other words, if we see a high tide expected at 6’, they can get a good idea of what that might look like at the street level using 4.5 in TITAN’s NAVD88 flood layer. …Rainfall: According to the NWS, Norfolk is looking at ~3” between now through Saturday.
As for windfall, it will begin to increase Thursday through Friday and peak overnight Friday into Saturday morning. Again, Tropical Storm-force winds are 39mph sustained, to which we come very close Friday night though early Saturday morning. There is an excellent possibility for downed trees and power lines.
Norfolk’s full EOC activation is still scheduled for 1pm.
All of Norfolk’s five announced shelters are still scheduled for 1pm.
