Strengthening families and protecting children is a community-wide responsibility. The Norfolk Prevention Network (NPN) is comprised of City and community leaders who are working together to create a buffer for families at risk, connecting them with resources and programs that educate and support parents, as well as promote positive youth development.
Prevention Focus
Research reveals that adverse childhood events increase the risk of health problems later in life. Exposure to stress, family instability, violence, abuse or neglect have lasting negative consequences that impact families for generations. These experiences place children at higher risk for:
- Behavioral and psychiatric problems
- Chronic disease
- Delinquency
- Emotional
- Lower educational attainment
- Poverty
- Substance abuse
- Teen pregnancy
NPN's network of providers work together on behalf of Norfolk families to:
- Coordinate a continuum of evidence-based programs
- Create a comprehensive plan for prevention
- Promote community education and awareness
- Provide strength-based and trauma-informed training to service providers
