About the Program
The Women, Infants and Children (WIC) program is a supplemental food program for pregnant, breastfeeding and non-breastfeeding postpartum women, infants and children up to age 5. The purpose of the program is to provide supplemental foods and nutrition education to eligible persons. The program serves as an adjunct to quality healthcare through nutrition education and counseling, providing nutritious healthy foods, and screenings. The WIC Program is funded and administered by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA).
WIC Approved Foods
The WIC program provides nutritious foods such as:
- Low fat cheese
- Dried or canned beans
- Fresh, frozen, canned fruits and vegetables
- Infant baby food
- Infant formula
- Low Fat Milk
- Peanut butter
- Whole grain bread, pasta, rice

WIC focuses on the overall health of women, infants, and children as well as promoting healthy pregnancy outcomes and the promotion of healthy eating for families.
It also provides breastfeeding peer support and referrals to other health care providers programs in the Norfolk Department of Public Health such as baby care, immunizations, car seat and smoking cessation programs.
