Norfolk's Emerging LeadersNorfolk Emeging Leaders

The City of Norfolk is excited to provide meaningful and educational employment opportunities to Norfolk young adults through the Norfolk Emerging Leaders (NEL) program. NEL participants not only gain valuable work experience, but also take part in work readiness and financial planning workshops, network with city employees, and participate in workshops with community leaders.

The program is divided into two employment opportunities: Emerging Leaders  and Municipal Interns. All NEL positions are paid and full-time (40 hours/week).

Emerging Leaders 
The Emerging Leaders Program is open to Norfolk residents, ages 16 to 19. Positions are available in over 20 city departments. Opportunities include, but are not limited to:
  • Budget and Grants Assistants
  • Finance Assistants
  • Library Assistants
  • Office Assistants
  • Public Works Specialists
  • Recreation Assistants
  • Student Artists
  • Utility Technicians

Students are placed in departments based on their career interest.

Executive Internship 
The Executive Internship Program is open to college or graduate students enrolled in accredited institutions. Career interest in government is preferred. Internship places students in various departments throughout the city where they will work on projects to directly address two major city priority areas: Lifelong Learning and Workforce Development. Applicants must submit a letter of recommendation and resume.

2015 Program Dates:
Executive Interns: June 8 - August 15, 2015
Emerging Leaders: June 29 - August 15, 2015
