Baseball great Babe Ruth once said:

The way a team plays as a whole determines its success. You may have the greatest bunch of individual stars in the world, but if they don't play together, the club won't be worth a dime.

Over the years, many people have worked together to make a safer Norfolk. And we have accomplished much because we have worked together under the PACE banner.

I know my grandfather would be the first to acknowledge what we all know, but rarely say. An important part of our success is the tenacity of one individual who has sought – above all – to make sure we work together.

She has called us together frequently to identify problems and urged us to work together to find solutions.

She is always ready to serve on our committees, march in our parades, slap down hot dogs at our picnics, drive all over the city to pick up supplies for our projects.

As she begins another phase in her service for Norfolk, she leaves not only a void but a challenge – we must continue our work in combating the causes of crime. We must continue reaching out to the community. We must identify problems and solve them together. Oh, and please write a report about it so others can learn.

We know you will still be there when we need you Marty Raiss. And we promise to try and live up to your example.
