5/2/08 – COMMONWEALTH VS. ANDY PATRICK WILLIAMS

Today, a judge in Norfolk Circuit Court sentenced Andy Patrick Williams, 26-years-old, to 2 life terms and 3 years in prison for the November 2007 convictions of 1 count of Aggravated Malicious Wounding, 1 count of Statutory Burglary of a Dwelling, and 1 count of Use of a Firearm in the Commission of a Felony.

Williams was charged after the July 15, 2003, shooting of a man on W. Ocean View Avenue.  The victim, Matthew Lingerfelt, suffered 12 gunshot wounds.  Williams and another man, Luke Haldorf, knew Lingerfelt and went to his apartment to burglarize it.  Williams began shooting when Lingerfelt came home and saw the 2 men inside.  An off-duty Norfolk Police Investigator was in his own apartment when he heard the gunshots.  He found Lingerfelt outside, called for help, and cared for Lingerfelt until paramedics arrived.  Williams and Haldorf were arrested and charged that day.  Haldorf is serving 5 years in prison for his convictions in this crime.

In a separate case, Williams is charged with 8 felony charges, including 1 count of First Degree Murder and 1 count of Use of a Firearm in the Commission of a Felony.  The charges are the result of the April 24, 2002, fatal shooting of a man, Luther Sumner, in the 8300 block of Cape View Avenue.

5/6/08 – COMMONWEALTH VS. WALTER LATWAIN MOORE

Today, Walter Latwain Moore, 29-years-old, appeared in Norfolk General District Court for preliminary hearing.  The judge certified 1 count of 2nd Degree Murder, to the Grand Jury and Norfolk Circuit Court. Moore was charged after the January 26, 2008, fatal shooting of a man, Timothy Yates, in the 800 block of Church Street. Another man, Yarnell Perez Norman, is facing charges in connection with this crime.

5/7/08 – COMMONWEALTH VS. STUART KATZ

Today, a judge in Norfolk Circuit Court formally sentenced Stuart Katz, 71-years-old, to 6 years in prison for the convictions of 1 count of Aggravated Sexual Battery and 2 counts of Indecent Liberties.  Katz was also ordered to pay a $50,000.00 fine.  A jury recommended the prison time and fine after convicting Katz in a 5 day trial in January 2008. Katz was charged after Norfolk Police Detectives investigated reports of sexual activity between him and a male juvenile dating back to April 2004.

5/9/08 – COMMONWEALTH VS. JAAMI LAMMAR TAYLOR

Today, a judge in Norfolk Circuit Court sentenced Jaami Lammar Taylor, 20-years-old, to 43 years in prison with 22 years suspended, resulting in 21 years of active incarceration for the convictions of 1 count of 2nd Degree Murder, 1 count of Use of a Firearm in the Commission of a Felony, and 1 count of Possession of Cocaine.  Taylor pleaded guilty to the charges on March 17, 2008. Taylor was charged after the fatal shooting of a man, Eugene Davis, on May 10, 2007, in the 2300 block of Cromwell Parkway. Another man, Eric Tyrone Cleveland, is serving 40 years in prison for his convictions in this crime.

5/9/08 – COMMONWEALTH VS. THERESA ANNE LELAND

Today, a judge in Norfolk Circuit Court sentenced Theresa Anne Leland, 46-years-old, to 15 years in prison with 10 years suspended, resulting in 5 years of active incarceration for the convictions of 3 counts of Embezzlement.  Leland pleaded guilty via Alford to the charges on October 9, 2007.  The suspended sentence is conditioned upon her repaying the victim $350,000.00 in $100.00 monthly installments after her release from custody.  She must also obtain a life insurance policy worth $350,000.00 payable to the victim. Leland was charged in May 2006 after taking money, over several years, from the law practice of R. Wayne Nunnally, where she worked as a secretary.

5/15/08 – COMMONWEALTH VS. OLIVER MONROE COLLINS, JR.

Today, Oliver Monroe Collins, Jr., 26-years-old, appeared in Norfolk General District Court for preliminary hearing.  The judge certified 2 charges, 1 count of 2nd Degree Murder and 1 count of Use of a Firearm in the Commission of a Felony, to the Grand Jury and Norfolk Circuit Court.      Oliver was charged after the March 4, 2008, fatal shooting of a man, Christian J. Harris, 19-years-old, on Fenner Street near Guy Avenue.

5/16/08 – COMMONWEALTH VS. ROBERT EARL MARABLE

Today, Robert Earl Marable, 47-years-old, was sentenced as a First Offender on a felony drug charge in Norfolk Circuit Court.  He will be on probation for 2 years and be without a driver’s license for 6 months.  He must also enroll in a drug treatment program, remain drug and alcohol free, and perform 100 hours of community service.  He is scheduled to be back before the Court on May 21, 2010, to have his case reviewed. Marable was charged with 1 count of Possession of Cocaine following a traffic stop in June 2007.  He was a Deputy with the Portsmouth Sheriff’s Office at the time of his arrest.  He is no longer employed by the Office.

5/20/08 – COMMONWEALTH VS. CHARLIE ELLIS JONES

Today, Charlie Ellis Jones, 50-years-old, pleaded guilty in Norfolk Circuit Court to 1 count of Grand Larceny, 1 count of Larceny with the Intent to Sell/Distribute, and 1 count of Conspiracy.  His sentencing hearing is scheduled for August 8, 2008. Jones was charged after copper was stolen from Dominion Virginia Power sites from December 2007 to February 2008.

5/21/08 – COMMONWEALTH VS. COREY ALAN BRYANT

Today, Corey Alan Bryant, 21-years-old, appeared in Norfolk Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court for preliminary hearing.  The judge certified the 2 charges against him, 2 counts of Child Cruelty/Neglect/Abuse, to the Grand Jury and Norfolk Circuit Court. Bryant was charged after his twin daughters, 10-months-old, were taken to a local hospital on April 4, 2008, in extremely poor health.  One child died. The girls’ mother, Heaven Kristine Smith, 20-years-old, is also facing charges in connection with this crime.

5/21/08 – COMMONWEALTH VS. HEAVEN KRISTINE SMITH

Today, Heaven Kristine Smith, 20-years-old, appeared in Norfolk Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court for preliminary hearing.  The judge certified the 3 charges against her, 1 count of 2nd Degree Murder and 2 counts of Child Cruelty/Neglect/Abuse to the Grand Jury and Norfolk Circuit Court. Smith was charged after her twin daughters, 10-months-old, were taken to a local hospital on April 4, 2008, in extremely poor health.  One child died. The girls’ father, Corey Alan Bryant, 21-years-old, is also facing charges in connection with this crime.

5/27/08 – COMMONWEALTH VS. CHARLES BLOUNT KELLO, III

Today, Charles Blount Kello, III, 63-years-old, appeared in Norfolk Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court for preliminary hearing.  Kello waived his hearing and the judge certified 5 counts of Indecent Liberties to the Grand Jury and Norfolk Circuit Court. Kello, III, was charged following a police investigation of reports from a 22-year-old woman who said she was sexually assaulted multiple times by Kello when she was 8-years-old and attending Freemason Baptist Church.  Kello was a youth leader at the church.

5/27/08 – COMMONWEALTH VS. TANIKA L. DURAND

Today, a judge in Portsmouth Circuit Court followed a jury’s recommendation and sentenced Tanika L. Durand, 22-years-old, to 17 years in prison for the conviction of 1 count of 2nd Degree Murder.  The jury convicted Durand of the charge in February 2008 following a 7 day trial. Durand was charged after the August 10, 2006, death of her 10-month-old son, Anthony Durand. The Office of the Norfolk Commonwealth’s Attorney was assigned by the Portsmouth Circuit Court to handle this case as a special prosecution.

5/29/08 – COMMONWEALTH VS. GREGORY DONNELL JUNIPER

Today, Gregory Donnell Juniper, 35-years-old, appeared in Norfolk General District Court for preliminary hearing.  The judge certified the 2 felony charges against him, 1 count of 2nd Degree Murder and 1 count of Use of a Firearm in the Commission of a Felony, to the Grand Jury and Norfolk Circuit Court. Juniper was charged after the January 30, 2008, fatal shooting of a man, Deon Lamont Benson, in the 7000 block of Sewells Point Road. Another man, Nakia Lamont Quinn, 33-years-old, is also facing charges in connection with this crime.      

5/30/08 – COMMONWEALTH VS. SHAMEKA PATRICE PITTMAN

Today, a judge in Norfolk Circuit Court sentenced Shameka Patrice Pittman, 22-years-old, to 10 years in prison with 5 years suspended, resulting in 5 years of time to serve for the conviction of 1 count of Abduction.  She pleaded guilty to the charge in November 2007.  Upon her release, she’ll be on probation for 20 years.  She is not allowed to visit a maternity ward of a hospital unless she is pregnant and patient.  She is not to have any contact with the family involved in this matter.  She is to receive substance abuse and mental health treatments. Pittman was charged in July 2007 after she was caught posing as a nurse and trying to leave the maternity ward of Sentara Norfolk General Hospital with a patient’s newborn.
