Technology Support Unit

The Technology Support Unit is made up of 1 Lieutenant, 1 Sergeant, 2 Sworn Officers, 3 programmer analysts and 1 administrative staff. The Unit is tasked with a variety of duties to include the coordination of the security and administration of the Virginia Criminal Network, the police department record management system, LINx security and system administrators, and acts as the security liaison for the City Information Technology Department. TSU coordinates all VCIN training and maintains all records governing VCIN certification for the entire department. The unit is additionally tasked with the distribution and accountability cellular telephone devices within the police department, and in car computers. The unit performs testing and functional reviews of all technology projects being considered by the police department to insure compatibility with existing systems and future needs.

The TSU coordinates the use of blackberry devices for selected Officers that have the capability of running queries in VCIN and DMV to include obtaining photographs from DMV. These devices have the additional capability of querying the departments wanted person web site which TSU designed and developed.

Our future technology projects include a community based camera system designed to assist the Project Focus Communities with fighting crime, the replacement of the analog in car cameras with a digital system that will enhance clarity and availability of these videos. The Technology Support Unit coordinates the issuance of new dual band portable radios to all sworn, ops officers and humane officers. The Technology Support unit is taking the lead in the designed and purchase of a community vehicle with the purpose of taking the police into the neighborhood to address those community issues that cannot be solved from the front seat of a police car. This vehicle will have a dual purpose of operating a Command vehicle in times of emergencies and significant events.
